Howdy folks!  Danny here.

The 2000-edition debut of the Draconia Calendar Series was originally intended to be a one-off deal, but it proved to be such a success, I figured a follow-up would be fitting.  The reason we went with dragons for 2000 was that, according to the Chinese zodiac, 2000 was the year of the dragon.  2001 was the year of the snake, and the 2001 edition was very nearly done as snake-girls instead of dragon-girls.  True story.

The theme for the 2001 edition was "The Elements," and so we decided to launch with thunder and lightning.  Enter Elektra.

After a year of flirtatiously smiling and coquettishly coy dragons in 2000, I wanted to go for something just a little more dangerous and adventurous, and so I figured Elektra ought to be a force to be reckoned with.

This is Elektra's very first calendar appearance, and she's second only to Red in the way of the greatest number of calendar appearances, having appeared in each one since her debut here in 2001.

While Elektra's attitude has remained steady throughout the run of the series, her appearance has undergone a good deal of change over the years.  The version seen here is a substantially younger version of Elektra, at a human age of late teens or early 20s.  To compare, today's Elektra is about 30-ish.

One of my favorite features to draw on Elektra are her "eye hook" tattoos.  In this picture, they're barely visible, but they're there.  It was a design element lifted from the Gunsmith Cats character Riff-Raff.  As time would go on, though, I kept drawing them just a little bit bigger and a little bit longer.  On several occasions, I've tried "resetting" them back to their original size, but they just keep growing back.  Because of that, some folks think that the "eye-hook" design element was borrowed from Britanny "Cheetah" Diggers from Fred Perry's venerable Gold Digger.  While Fred IS a buddy of mine, this is not the case.  Sorry.

Elektra would indeed appear in every calendar thereafter, but largely as a background or supporting character.  When the time came to launch the webcomic, we figured Elektra would be a good character to anchor the story while the other principal characters were tied up in other parallel storylines.  Her first comic appearance comes on page 4.  From there, she took the ball and ran like...  well, like lightning.
